Happy Friday Families,
What a week!
Kew Traffic School…
On Monday, our Kinder 4 children had the amazing opportunity to visit Kew Traffic School, a purpose built miniature road village designed to help children develop their road safety awareness in a fun, hands on environment.
In the lead up to the excursion, our Kinder 4s have been learning all about road safety as part of our ongoing focus on community, independence, and safety. Earlier this year, we even held a special “Ride at Kinder” day, where children brought their bikes and scooters from home to practise navigating roads, intersections, and traffic signs in our car park. The children have been building a great foundation of knowledge, and the visit to Kew Traffic School was the perfect way to bring all those lessons to life.
The day began with lots of excitement as we boarded a big coach bus, which in itself was a highlight for many of the children! Once we arrived at Kew Traffic School, we were warmly welcomed and gathered for a road safety talk, where we revisited key messages about stop signs, pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, and helmet safety.
Then it was time for the fun part, choosing our wheels! The children had the opportunity to pick from bicycles, tricycles, and scooters, and set off exploring the mini road network. There were roundabouts, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and even road signs, just like the real world. It was a joy to see the children applying what they’ve learned in such a practical and engaging way. Many confidently stopped at red lights, gave way when needed, and navigated intersections with care.
After all that active learning, we sat down together for a picnic lunch under the trees, sharing stories about our favourite parts of the day. Then it was time to hop back on the coach and head back to Choklits. It had been such a big, exciting adventure that a few of us even drifted off to sleep on the bus ride home!
Excursions like this are such a valuable part of early learning. They allow children to extend their understanding beyond the classroom and connect their knowledge to real life situations in meaningful ways. We’re so proud of our Kinder 4s and how they represented Choklits with such enthusiasm and maturity on the day.
Plant to Plate…
This week, our children rolled up their sleeves once again for another hands on plant to plate gardening session, with a special focus on growing our winter crops. These sessions continue to be a much loved part of our program, offering children rich opportunities to engage with nature, develop responsibility, and see the full cycle of food production in action.
We ventured out to check on our veggie patches and to everyone’s delight, we discovered that our snow peas were thriving and there were so many ready to harvest! The children carefully picked handfuls of fresh snow peas, which we proudly passed on to chef Tayani in the kitchen. Later that day, they were served up at lunch!
These harvest moments are incredibly powerful. They not only teach children about where food comes from but also build a real sense of achievement and connection to the process. Being able to see the direct link between their care for the plants and the food on their plates makes the experience so much more impactful.
After harvesting, we got to work weeding the garden beds and making sure all our plants had enough water. Gardening is not just about planting and picking, it’s also about learning to nurture and care for living things consistently. The children take this responsibility seriously and love being part of the routine care of our garden. We were also excited to spot the very first potato sprouts beginning to peek through the soil, a promising sign of what’s still to come in our winter garden.
Rhythm and Moves…
This week we had another visit from Rhythm and Moves, who deliver our much loved weekly music sessions. These visits are a regular highlight in our program, and the children eagerly anticipate them each week. This is a part of our program that runs from Nursery all the way to our Kinder rooms.
Each session is thoughtfully planned, with a focus on different songs, rhythms, and movements that help children learn through music, dance, and active participation. Music is a powerful learning tool, and these sessions support children in developing important skills such as listening, coordination, memory, and self-expression, all while having fun.
One of the most exciting parts for the children is getting to explore the wide variety of musical instruments that Rhythm and Moves bring along. From tambourines and maracas to hand drums and bells, the children are encouraged to listen, respond to cues, and experiment with creating their own sounds.
Music plays such a valuable role in early childhood development, and Rhythm and Moves have a beautiful way of making these experiences meaningful and memorable. We’re so grateful to have them as part of our weekly routine, and we look forward to many more sessions filled with singing, dancing, and smiles.
Next Week…
On Wednesday, we’ll be taking part in National Simultaneous Storytime, a much loved event celebrated by early learning services and schools across Australia. Each year, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author is chosen to be read simultaneously in thousands of locations at the same time. This shared experience helps promote the importance of early literacy, the joy of reading aloud, and the power of storytelling in bringing communities together.
Then on Thursday, our Kinder 4s will be heading out on another Bush Kinder adventure. To help your child get the most out of this experience, please make sure they are wearing closed toe shoes and are dressed appropriately for the weather, including a jumper or jacket if needed.
