Choklits Ringwood Friday Update May 30th

Hello Families,

We’ve had a truly wonderful week at Choklits Ringwood, filled with fun, learning, and meaningful activities, especially as we came together to acknowledge Reconciliation Week. It was heartwarming to see the children engaging with such important themes through play, storytelling, art, and more.

Thank you for being part of this special journey with us!

Family Room Suggestion Box…

At Choklits, we are always striving to grow and improve in everything we do and we truly value your input.  To facilitate this, a suggestion box has been placed in our Family Room (previously known as the paint room) for you to add your feedback and suggestions (anonymously should you wish).   Your voice plays a vital role in shaping our future.

Highlights from the week…

Each room thoughtfully planned a range of meaningful experiences to introduce children to this year’s theme, “Bridging Now to Next,” which reflects the ongoing connection between past, present, and future. It was a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through hands-on learning, creativity, and storytelling.

Nursery: our young learners participated in a creative boomerang-making experience. Using glue sticks, they carefully placed red, black, and yellow paper pieces, the colours of the Aboriginal flag, onto boomerang shapes. This supported their fine motor development while nurturing an early appreciation for Aboriginal culture and symbolism. The children showed pride in their work and curiosity throughout the process.

Pre-toddler: The children created their own Rainbow Serpents using paper plates, inspired by the story they read together. They enjoyed painting the plates in bright colours and also explored native flowers and leaf painting. This activity encouraged creativity, developed fine motor skills, and opened discussions about diversity and cultural stories.

Toddlers:  Our toddlers prepared a beautiful bush tucker display tray, introducing native Australian foods found in the bush, such as fruits, seeds, herbs, and spices. We explored how Aboriginal peoples use banksia flowers and pine cones to filter water, and how herbs like lemon myrtle, thyme, and rosemary are used in cooking. This activity not only sparked curiosity but also gave us a meaningful way to talk about Reconciliation Week.

3 and 4 Year-Old Kinder: Our kinder children worked together to create a large Rainbow Serpent mural. Using a big paper snake outline, they added colourful pieces to bring the Dreamtime story to life. They also learned about Aboriginal symbols and created their own using markers. To complete the mural, each child added their handprint in red, yellow, or black as a symbol of unity and belonging.

In addition, to deepen their learning, our four-year-old group went on a special excursion to the Mullum Market. There, they joined a traditional smoking ceremony, explored an Indigenous art exhibition, listened to cultural stories, and observed various artworks. It was a fun and enriching day that connected our children to the broader community and offered a meaningful experience with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

We’re so proud of how engaged, respectful, and curious the children were throughout the week. Thank you for supporting us in creating a space where reconciliation, understanding, and inclusion are at the heart of our learning.
