Choklits Surrey Hills Friday Update April 11th

Hello families,

What a fantastic week we’ve had at Choklits! Our little learners have been busy exploring, playing, and celebrating special events. Here’s a recap of all the excitement-

Excursions…

This week, we tried something new and went down to visit our friends at Surrey Hills Garden Care Community. Our Kinder 3 and 4 children had a great time seeing what our community has to offer. This excursion included some great activities that our children and their new friends enjoyed together. For more information about the Kinder trip to Surrey Hills Garden Care Community, visit our socials.

Nature Play Week…

This week, we immersed ourselves in all things nature as we celebrated Nature Play Week. This is a time to slow down, explore the outdoors and connect with the world around us in meaningful ways. The children were engaged in open-ended and imaginative play using natural materials as tools for creativity and learning.

Throughout the week, the children ventured outdoors to collect natural resources, such as sticks, leaves, seed pods, flowers, and stones. These treasures were brought back into our learning spaces and used in a variety of ways. They were used to make nature collages and leaf print art. They also were used to make nature-inspired threading activities. These experiences sparked wonderful conversations about textures, colours, shapes, and patterns found in the environment.

Nature Play Week also tied beautifully into our ongoing Plant to Plate program. The children have been learning about the journey of food from garden to table, with hands-on experiences in our centre garden. This week, we spent time nurturing our vegetable beds, watering seedlings, and adding homemade compost from our food scraps. Through these experiences, children discussed how food grows, what plants need to thrive, and the importance of reducing waste by turning leftovers into new life in our garden!

Sustainable Development Research Initiative…

Focusing on our contributions to our community and environment, we are developing a new Choklits research program. We are excited to offer you, the parents, an opportunity to get involved in how your children learn, reflect and play through this research initiative. Our team at Choklits will be focusing on some key areas of global sustainability and development to identify ways that we as a community can contribute to and make a difference in the world.

We are now in April and for those of you who are not aware, we have announced our Research goal for April as Life on Land.

The Life on Land goal, part of the Sustainable Development Goals, aims to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. It focuses on preventing deforestation, conserving biodiversity, combating desertification, and ensuring the sustainable management of forests and natural habitats to support all life on Earth.

Here are some key areas that make the foundation of this focus:

  1. Promoting Green Spaces and Biodiversity
  2. Teaching Environmental Responsibility
  3. Reducing Environmental Impact
  4. Engaging with Families and the Community

Our little learners have already planned to do so many great things for nourishing our land and environment. We have World Earth Day coming up in the next couple of weeks and the children will be planning a day to plant some new life in our gardens. Stay up to date with all of our planned projects through our socials.

Educator spotlight…

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Jason, Jason has been a part of the Choklits education team since December and is certified with a Graduate Diploma. So far, Jason has formed great relationships with the children in the Pre-Kinder room. He has shown his passion for education by guiding children through play and supporting their development.

Thank you for the amazing work you do for the children Jason! You are a great role model for the children and we look forward to seeing your future development and contribution to our Choklits community.

ANZAC Day…
As we move through April, we will also take time to reflect on ANZAC Day. The children will engage in activities to learn about the significance of this day, including making poppies, reading stories, and discussing themes of remembrance and gratitude in an age-appropriate way. We will be showing all of our amazing work through our socials and updates on Kinder M8 news feeds. We would love to include input from families for this event, especially if there are loved ones that want to share some stories with the children.
