Choklits Surrey Hills Friday Update June 6th

Hello families,

It’s been a rich and meaningful week at Choklits Surrey hills as we explored important themes of reconciliation, sustainability, and our connection to the natural world. Through learning experiences both in and out of the centre, the children have shown curiosity, respect, and care in everything they’ve achieved.

National Reconciliation Week at Surrey hills…

Throughout the week, we’ve been acknowledging National Reconciliation Week, reflecting on this year’s theme: Now More Than Ever. Through storytelling, art, and yarning circles, children were introduced to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. We’ve been exploring how we can be kind, inclusive, and respectful to one another, and to the land we share. Educators facilitated age-appropriate discussions and creative experiences using traditional symbols and natural materials to deepen the children’s understanding of connection to Country.

World Environment day…

We also celebrated World Environment Day, a day to raise awareness about protecting our planet. The children participated in gardening activities, nature walks, and discussions about reusing, recycling, and reducing waste. Each room participated in this important day by jumping into different environments to see what change they could make, either big or small, all children got involved and made a difference.

Sustainable Development Research Initiative…

In line with our ongoing sustainability curriculum, we looked at UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. The children learned about how our actions on land affect the ocean and marine life. Using books, visual prompts, and small-world play, we discussed the importance of reducing plastic, caring for sea creatures, and keeping our waterways clean. The children especially enjoyed making ocean collages from recycled materials and talking about their favourite sea animals!

As May comes to an end and we now find ourselves thrown into June with excitement, we now would like to open up voting for our next Research goal.

If you would like to get involved in our selection process, please leave your votes by filling out our voting form(which only takes one minute to complete). Click the link here to get started.

Educator Highlight…

This week, we have a new staff member joining us, Vera.

For those that don’t know, Vera has completed her university placement with us at Choklits. Vera is currently studying her Graduate Diploma in Early childhood Education. Vera has shown her passion in every interaction with children and families. We look forward to what you will bring to our team in the future.

We would like to acknowledge Feri and Mahla completing their Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Education and Care. This is a wonderful achievement and we are so proud of their hard work and dedication. Please make sure you congratulate them when you see them next.

Excursion to Surrey Park…

This week, some of our rooms also enjoyed an exciting excursion to Surrey Park. The children engaged in nature play, group games, and observational walks. We took time to notice the trees, birds, and changing seasons—pausing to talk about the importance of preserving green spaces in our community. It was a beautiful morning of connection, outdoor learning, and exploration.

Piano Classes with Regina…

Music has filled our centre thanks to Regina’s piano sessions! The children are developing their listening skills, rhythm, and musical expression through hands-on exploration of piano keys and group participation. These classes are not only enjoyable but help foster focus, coordination, and a love for the arts. Using practical approaches to finger positioning, Regina is able to prepare children to smoothly transition from the table to a real keyboard.

Phonics Classes with Chai…

Our phonics program with Chai continues to build strong early literacy foundations. Children have been focusing on sound recognition, blending, and early word building in fun, interactive ways. Chai’s playful and engaging approach keeps children motivated and excited about their phonics journey each week.
