Over to Jill…
I love working in early education and care because ever since I can remember I admired my first primary school teacher. It wasn’t what she taught me but how she taught me. I just remember always having fun. I also remember sadness when I got up early for school for my mum to then crush my heart and tell me it was a Saturday. I wanted to be that person who made children upset that it was the weekend. I enjoy helping and watching the children build their confidence in their environment and with their friends and educators. We as early childhood educators are an important part of a child’s life, supporting their development of many skills that they will continue to develop into their childhood and beyond. I want to bring that joy and excitement to the children and help them be the best they can be right now and into their future.
Throughout my career I’ve been most proud of getting to experience all the different opportunities I have been given through my early childhood career and all the children who’s lives I have been able to be apart of. From starting off in a nursery and getting to watch children taking their first steps, saying their first words and the simple joy of experiencing something for the first time, to experiencing the environment of school rooms during my placements, to being a kindergarten teacher and getting to implement my own program while getting them ready for school, to taking my skills overseas with me to work with children on a cruise ship and now here at Choklits. Every single opportunity and experience I have had with every single child I have met on my journey has made me who I am today.
When I’m not at Choklits I enjoy binge watching TV shows and during lockdown I have become a huge fan of knitting so I’m always knitting a new beanie or blanket. And, when I’m in the mood, I’ve really fallen in love with running after doing a few half marathons while living overseas.
The cutest thing a child has ever said to me was while working on a cruise ship. We had a computer system that had information on all the children checked into the kids club for safety reasons. I saw a girl with the same name as me so I called out “hey, is Jill here?” This little girl looked up from her drawing and I said “we have the same name!” For the rest of that cruise we were best friends and we drew pictures and made gifts for each other. I still have her pictures and they always warm my heart when I look at them.
