Choklits Croydon Friday Update May 9th

Happy Friday Families,

What a wonderful and busy week it’s been! Even with the chilly, rainy weather keeping us indoors a few afternoons this week, the children have shown just how creative and adaptable they are. From imaginative play to games, music, and plenty of hands on experiences, we’ve packed our days full of learning and fun.

Woodwork with Michelle…

This week, our Kinder children took part in a fantastic hands on project with Michelle, transforming old furniture and tyres into a car for our outdoor yard! Woodwork and construction are a pivotal part of our program, offering children the chance to develop fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and confidence as they learn to use tools safely and with purpose. In this project, the learning extended well beyond the toolbox, the children dug deep holes using shovels, discovered insects and beetles in the soil, selected tyres, and even helped dig trenches to secure them in place. Each step was a meaningful learning experience, encouraging curiosity, physical coordination, collaboration, and persistence.

Projects like this not only inspire creativity and resilience but also give children a sense of ownership and pride in shaping their environment. It’s been a joy to watch their ideas come to life and we can’t wait to see what they create next!

Jumpstart Joeys Literacy Program…

This week, we were lucky to have another visit from the Jumpstart Joeys literacy program, and as always, it was a hit with the children! These sessions are packed with playful learning, and it’s been wonderful to see how confident and enthusiastic the Kinder group is becoming with early literacy concepts. The children enjoyed exploring a new letter sound through songs, movement, and hands on activities that had them fully engaged from start to finish. It’s so rewarding to watch their eyes light up as they connect sounds with meaning and start to see themselves as capable communicators.

Mothers Day Afternoon Tea…

On Friday, we held our annual Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea, a truly special event where we welcomed mothers, parents, grandparents, and other special guests into our service to celebrate together. It was a beautiful afternoon filled with connection, creativity, and joy. The children were bursting with excitement to share this time with their families. Together, they enjoyed a range of hands on experiences including arts and crafts, crown making, and some lovely Mother’s Day-themed play dough fun, all while everyone enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea. We are so grateful to all the families who joined us and made the event so memorable. These shared moments create lasting memories for the children and strengthen the wonderful sense of community we’re so proud of at our service.

Basketball Clinic…

On Friday, the children had a fantastic time participating in a basketball clinic led by Tahlia. Tahlia introduced the group to the basics of basketball, including dribbling, passing, and shooting, all tailored to be developmentally appropriate and fun for young learners.

The session focused on developing gross motor skills, hand eye coordination, and teamwork in an active, supportive environment. The children practiced bouncing and controlling the ball, taking turns with partners, and aiming for the goals. There was plenty of cheering, laughter, and encouragement as everyone gave it a go.

Next Week – Kinder 4 Excursion…

Next Monday, our Kinder 4s will be heading out on an excursion to Kew Traffic School! This experience is a meaningful extension of our recent Ride at Kinder day and the ongoing learning around road safety, responsible riding, and being aware in the community.

The excursion will give children the opportunity to practise what they’ve been learning in a real world setting, navigating roads, signs, pedestrian crossings, and more, all in a safe, purpose built environment. Experiences like this help reinforce important safety messages in a hands-on and memorable way, empowering children with the knowledge and confidence to make safe choices when out and about.
