Choklits Surrey Hills Friday Update May 16th

Hello families,

We’ve had a beautifully busy and heartwarming week here at Choklits Surrey Hills, filled with celebration, learning, and community connection. Here’s a look at the highlights:

Australian Native Animals…

This week at Choklits Surrey Hills, the children explored their creativity and cultural awareness by making Australian native animals using recycled paper and yarn. This meaningful activity encouraged fine motor development, sustainability, and an appreciation for Australia’s unique wildlife. It also laid the foundation for deeper learning as we prepare to extend our focus for Reconciliation Week.

Phonics Program…

Another exciting highlight was the start of our Phonics program! The kinder children were introduced to Milo the Monkey and the letter Mm. They identified objects beginning with the letter M—such as mango, mushroom, money, milk, moon, microwave, and muffin—and had fun feeding Milo with matching cut-out pictures. To support letter formation, the children created colourful rainbow M’s and finished off by decorating Milo Monkey masks and dancing to Five Little Monkeys. It was a magnificent start to our phonics journey—can’t wait for next week’s adventures!

Sustainable Development Research Initiative…

In May, our sustainability goal at Choklits Surrey Hills is Life Below Water.

This goal, part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focuses on conserving and sustainably using our oceans, seas, and marine resources. It highlights the importance of reducing marine pollution, protecting marine ecosystems, supporting sustainable fishing practices, and raising awareness about the critical role oceans play in supporting life on Earth.

We can’t wait to see all the thoughtful and engaging activities our educators will create to help children explore and understand this important theme!

Educator Highlight…

This week, we want to give a big shout-out to Regina, our amazing Educator in the Kinder 4 Room!

Regina works closely with our Kinder Teacher to create a warm, organised, and engaging learning environment where every child feels supported. Her collaborative approach helps ensure the room runs smoothly and that children’s individual learning needs are met every day. During our recent aged care visit, Regina brought smiles to everyone’s faces by playing the piano — beautifully connecting children and elders through music. We’re also excited to share that she’ll be starting a piano class with the children soon, offering a wonderful opportunity to explore rhythm, melody, and creativity.

Thank you, Regina, for your passion, teamwork, and dedication!

National Simultaneous Storytime…

The National Simultaneous Storytime is just around the corner — happening on Wednesday, 21st May!

This special event celebrates the joy of reading by bringing children across Australia together to share the same book at the same time. It promotes early literacy, language development, and a love for books in a fun and engaging way. Storytime sparks imagination, encourages active listening, and supports children’s understanding of rhythm, rhyme, and storytelling structures — all essential foundations for lifelong learning.

Kinder Bike Riding Fridays…

Dr Chan is visiting soon…

We’re looking forward to welcoming Dr Chan back to Choklits next for his regular visit. These visits are a wonderful opportunity to support each child’s health and wellbeing in a familiar, comfortable environment.

If you have any questions or would like to speak with Dr Chan during his visit, please let us know and we’ll be happy to assist.

Kinder Lunch Boxes…

Every first week of the month is Lunch Box Week to help prepare children for school. Please pack an empty lunch box for your child throughout this week. Make sure you view our Autumn menu on our website here.
